The importance of safe driving around tractor trailers in NV

Large trucks pose a serious danger to motorists on the road. However, drivers can take caution and possibly avoid a devastating truck accident.

Las Vegas motorists who drive alongside tractor trailers on a regular basis may not realize the dangers these massive trucks can pose on other drivers. Although there are many truck drivers who operate commercial vehicles in a safe manner, there are others who do not always follow proper protocol. The Federal Motor Safety Carrier Administration enforces rules to ensure that truck drivers are operating their rigs safely. However, there are things that motorists can do to help avoid commercial vehicle accidents on Nevada roadways.

Safe driving tips

Tractor trailers can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, and require well-trained, focused drivers to maneuver them through traffic. According to State Farm, motorists should understand the following in order to minimize the risk of large truck accidents:

  • Never pull in front of tractor trailers - Large trucks require a greater stopping distance, and may rear-end a vehicle that pulls out in front of them.
  • Be aware of blind spots - Tractor trailers have several blind spots, including one directly in front of the truck and one on the left-hand side. There are also large no-zones on the right-hand side and behind the truck. Truck drivers are less likely to see vehicles driving in these spots. Motorists are encouraged to pass large trucks quickly and on their left-hand side rather than linger in the truck's blind spot.
  • Drive cautious around tractor trailers - This is especially true in bad weather, including icy, snowy, rainy, windy and foggy conditions. Tractor trailers can jack-knife, slide and tip over in these circumstances.
  • Give large trucks some distance - Since there are large blind spots behind tractor trailers, motorists should refrain from following large trucks too closely. If the driver cannot see the truck's side mirror, the truck driver cannot see the vehicle.

Most importantly, motorists should remain aware at all times and avoid engaging in distractive activities that may remove their focus from the road.

Large trucks are deadly

America has seen an increase in the number of people killed and injured in large truck accidents. In 2012, tractor trailer accidents took the lives of 3,802 people, which is a substantial increase from the 3,211 large truck fatalities that occurred in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While some point to fatigued drivers as the reason for this significant increase, others believe that a shortage of truck drivers also plays a role.
