Drunk driver sentenced after causing death of 5-year-old girl

When a Nevada grandmother took her two grandchildren for a walk on Jan. 2, 2014, she could not have been prepared for what would happen. Her 5-year-old granddaughter was riding her tricycle when a 53-year-old woman backed her vehicle out from a driveway into the street. The young girl was knocked off her tricycle and died from the injuries she suffered. It was subsequently determined that a drunk driver caused the child's death.

The driver was arrested, and after an initial not guilty plea, she pleaded guilty on the first day of her scheduled trial. She was ordered to pay a fine of $2,000 for causing a person's death when driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to between three and 15 years in a state prison. Regardless of her sentence, the void of the lost child will forever remain in the hearts of her loved ones.

When a child or another family member is killed in an auto accident, the family suffers devastating consequences. In addition, the financial burden of end-of-life arrangements can be overwhelming. To help address these issues, the civil judicial system allows surviving family members to pursue wrongful death litigation.

With the support and guidance of an experienced wrongful death attorney, all sources of potential compensation may be identified. The fact that the drunk driver in this case pleaded guilty in criminal court will benefit any civil litigation for financial damages pursued by this Nevada family. Documented claims may include financial losses and emotional damages that were brought about by the tragic accident.
