3 steps for getting your car repaired after an accident

When you get in a car accident, your mind is full of worries and questions. One of the first things you think about is the damage to your car. If you are currently stressing out about how to get your vehicle fixed, we are here to help.

While the details of the process may vary depending on insurance policies and the nature of the crash, here is a basic guide to getting your car fixed after an accident.

1. Get an inspection and estimate

Sometimes the insurance company representing the driver who caused the collision will send an inspector to assess property damage. Other times, you may be able to take your car to a repair shop to get an estimate. Some insurance companies require you to use a specific auto body shop. After the inspection, the company will provide an estimate of the cost of repairs.

2. Pay for the repairs

After your car gets repaired, the insurance company should cover the costs. In most cases, you can choose to get the company to send a check to the repair shop or pay for the repairs upfront. If you choose to pay for the repairs and ask for reimbursement, make sure that the repair shop and insurance company agree on the total costs so you do not pay more than what your insurance will cover.

3. If necessary, dispute the claim

Unfortunately, working with insurance providers does not always go smoothly. Often, insurance companies and repair shops will disagree on estimates. You might feel the company is offering an unfairly low amount to cover your damages from the crash. In this case, you may need to go through mediation or arbitration or go to court.

Whenever you are dealing with car damage and injuries, it is a good idea to talk to an attorney before talking to the insurance company or agreeing to a settlement.
