Las Vegas drivers are tasked with obeying the law and being mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists along the roadway. Unfortunately, pedestrians that are more vulnerable are often subject to serious injuries due to their lack of protection against larger, enclosed vehicles. This vulnerability may be exacerbated when additional negligent factors, such as driving under the influence, are also involved. A recent fatal pedestrian accident underscores the point.
Metro police reported that a 63-year-old man was standing in the road in the late evening hours when he was struck by a pickup truck. Reports do not state whether he was standing inside a crosswalk, or what traffic light conditions were. The pedestrian was transported to a local medical center where he was pronounced dead.
The 26-year-old man driving the pickup truck was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence, and operating his pickup truck without proper registration. This tragic accident marks this year’s 48th fatality due to traffic-related incidents. Unfortunately, Las Vegas roadways are often crowded with many vehicles and pedestrians, which create the potential for accidents to occur.
The family of the man killed in this recent pedestrian accident may find it beneficial to be proactive in building a support team to help them work through the complexities of their case. Beyond the physical pain that their loved one suffered, fatal accidents often take a hefty toll on the finances of the victims’ loved ones. Medical or funeral expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering are common after a fatal accident, which is why it is fortunate that there are laws in place to help protect victims’ families.
