Police deputies can be some of the most respected members in the country’s workforce. Most officers are willing to put their lives in harm’s way on a daily basis in order to protect the well-being of the general public. Sadly, some motor vehicle accidents involving our law enforcement officials have resulted in tragic consequences. A recent motorcycle accident in Nevada claimed the life of a Washoe County deputy.
The incident occurred in the middle of an afternoon on a Reno highway. A van driven by a 29-year-old man collided with the motorcyclist at an intersection after pulling out into his path. The 37-year-old victim suffered critical injuries when the force from the collision launched him from his bike. He was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The van’s driver was unharmed by the incident. Authorities are looking for information from any witnesses to this crash as their investigation continues. If enough evidence is gathered which suggests that the actions of the van’s driver were careless or reckless, then he could be facing serious repercussions as a result of this tragic accident.
The family of the deceased officer could benefit from a thorough review of the facts and circumstances of this incident in conjunction with Nevada state laws. When evidence suggests that fatalities in motor vehicle accidents were caused by the negligent actions of another individual, then a wrongful death claim can be filed in civil court. Compensation awarded as the result of a successful claim can help to cover burial expenses, funeral costs and other expenses.
