Readers of this Las Vegas blog may be aware of the massive effects a drunk driver can have on any family. Although most of the stories we hear about are a drunk driver injuring or even killing someone in another vehicle, it is not always the case. One family has suffered a tragic loss as the result of a drunk driver driving in the same vehicle as their loved one.
The family will likely always mourn the untimely passing of their beloved relative. According to reports, a group of girlfriends went out to dinner one night at a Las Vegas restaurant just hours before the fatal accident. One of the women in this group was a 28-year-old wife and mother of two small boys. The group of women were said to have been sharing bottles of wine before the accident.
One of the women gave the 28-year-old a ride home. Not long after their departure, the driver crashed the vehicle into an embankment. The passenger was thrown from the vehicle and thereafter pronounced dead. The driver was found to be intoxicated at the time of the car accident, and was ultimately convicted of driving under the influence. Officials claim that the woman’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit allowed under Nevada law.
The passenger’s husband and their two sons filed a claim against the drunk driver and recently won that settlement. The jury thought that a $10 million settlement fit the punishment for taking away a wife and mother in such an awful way. Each case is unique, but every family deserves the right to attempt to receive restitution from a drunk driver in civil court if they so desire — much like this one did.
