Las Vegas reports 13 dog attacks against postal carriers in 2013

The third full week of May is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. However, regardless of the time of year, dog bite prevention is crucial to children, adults, postal workers and many other individuals across the country, including here in Las Vegas. Dog attacks may not happen as often as car accidents or other events, but they are more common than many Las Vegas residents may believe.

In 2013, roughly 4.5 individuals in America suffered a dog bite in some shape or form. This included more than two million children and over 5,500 employees of the U.S. Postal Service. Although other cities had more dog attacks on postal workers, Las Vegas reported 13 dog attacks.

Other alarming statistics include the fact that two-thirds of children that are bitten by a dog are bitten on the neck or head. In 2013, nearly 27,000 reconstructive procedures were performed following dog bite injuries. Nationwide, there were thousands of dog bite injury claims made to insurance companies, totaling more than $480 million.

Many dogs bite under certain circumstances. For Las Vegas residents --whether a postal worker, child or someone else -- there is legal recourse available. Justice can be served by alerting the proper authorities about dog attacks and pursuing a civil claim, if desired. In some cases, the dangerous dog may be removed from the home and euthanized. For the victim that can document that the bite and injuries suffered occurred due to the negligence of another party, compensation may be obtainable to defray lost wages, medical bills and emotional anguish.
