2 lives lost after alleged drunk driver crashes into disabled car

Following a fatal crash on Interstate 80 in Reno on a recent Friday evening, a 27-year-old driver was arrested, and bail was set in the amount of $100,000. At last report, the man was still incarcerated. Nevada Highway Patrol have accused him of being a drunk driver, having smashed his pickup into a car that was disabled on the side of the roadway, causing the death of two people. The crash occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m.

A preliminary accident report indicates that a disabled car was parked on the shoulder of the road when the alleged drunk driver merged onto the interstate and smashed into it. Two people -- age 27 and 23 -- in the disabled car were killed in the collision. One of the charges he is facing is for leaving an accident scene.

Other charges filed when the pickup truck driver was booked into the Washoe County jail included two counts each of suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving. Reportedly, Nevada Highway Patrol officers also arrested the 27-year-old passenger of the pickup truck on suspicion of leaving the scene of the accident and not rendering aid to injured victims. He was later released.

The surviving family members of the two people who lost their lives in this tragic accident may pursue financial relief by filing wrongful death claims in a Nevada civil court. For such claims to be successful, the plaintiffs will have to establish negligence on the part of the alleged drunk driver. They may then file documented claims for economic losses and emotional damages that were brought about by the crash.
