For some residents in Nevada cities these days, biking is a main source of transportation. Most of the time vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians alike share city streets without incident. However, rising populations mean there are more and more people sharing the road. The constant flow of traffic on city streets can pose risks to all commuters. Recently in Las Vegas, police say a negligent driver critically injured a young bicyclist who was attempting to cross a street.
The accident occurred in the afternoon hours at a Las Vegas intersection. According to reports, the young victim was attempting to cross the street on a bicycle while using a crosswalk and was struck by the driver of a pickup truck. Witness reports say that, after striking the cyclist, the driver of the pickup truck continued along the street for about two and a half miles with the bicycle lodged underneath his truck. The bicycle was discarded near a dumpster and later located by authorities.
Unfortunately, the collision left the cyclist seriously injured, and he was rushed to a local medical center for treatment. Witnesses on the scene were able to identify the pickup truck and driver involved in the accident. The driver of the pickup truck was arrested and booked on a felony charge.
In the state of Nevada and all across the country, laws are in place to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Despite these laws, accidents involving vehicles and cyclists continue to occur. Unlike drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are exposed, so any accident can have very tragic consequences. Any person who suffers injuries or the loss of a loved one due to a negligent driver has a right to pursue a claim for damages. Victims and/or their families could be entitled to financial relief and would greatly benefit from seeking the services of an experienced personal injury attorney.
