While under the influence of alcohol, the simplest tasks can become very difficult. It is common knowledge that getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated is one of the most dangerous things a person can do. Impaired drivers endanger themselves and all others around them. A recent drunk driving accident in Reno, Nevada, is evidence of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. The crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left the perpetrator with a 40-year prison sentence.
According to police reports, the intoxicated driver sped through a stop light and crashed into the rear of another vehicle at a high rate of speed. Police estimate that the intoxicated driver was traveling in excess of 70 mph when he struck the other vehicle. The perpetrator initially fled the scene, but authorities found him hiding in a nearby parking lot. Police reports state that the driver’s blood alcohol level was over twice the legal limit at the time of the accident and that he had considerable marijuana metabolites in his system.
The two occupants of the other vehicle were transported to a local hospital where they unfortunately died as a result of their injuries. The drunk driver was arrested and charged. He was recently sentenced to 40 years in prison on two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol or a prohibited substance and/or a combination of alcohol and a controlled substance that resulted in the death of another.
There are literally no positive outcomes to getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Unfortunately, impaired drivers are a very real problem on roadways across the country. Nevada citizens that suffer personal injury or the loss of a loved one in a drunk driving accident have the right to take legal action. A successful lawsuit can result in vital compensation that can be used to cover medical bills and other expenses.
