3 tips for driving safely during the NFR

As a Las Vegas native, you know that the National Finals Rodeo is here every year. As it approaches this year, you are probably dreading the uptick in traffic. When the NFR gets into full swing, the streets get full of more cars and the sidewalks packed with more pedestrians than usual.

When you are simply trying to commute to work or get around the city, you will likely encounter a lot more vehicles and people for the first two weeks in December. Some of the out-of-town drivers may even be drunk. Here are some ways you can prepare for the traffic and tips for driving in it.

1. Make sure your car is safe

First things first – you must make sure your car is in good working condition. Driving in traffic requires you to use your brakes a lot, so be sure to have frequent braking system inspections and replacements when necessary. Make sure your brake lights and indicators are working properly, too.

2. Slow down and leave distance

According to Top Driver, one way to properly deal with heavy traffic is by slowing down. You may be tempted to try to weave in and out of traffic and drive faster to avoid being late, but this only leads to trouble. Keep an adequate amount of space between you and other cars so you have enough time to react.

3. Watch out for drunk drivers and pedestrians

You should always keep an eye out for signs of intoxicated motorists and pedestrians. If you see drivers veering out of their lanes, driving slower than the flow of traffic or ignoring traffic signals, they may be drunk. Drunk pedestrians may have trouble walking and may ignore crosswalks.

It can be stressful to drive around Las Vegas, especially when a giant event is going on. However, take these three tips to heart and you can navigate the roads safely even when things are hectic.
