Fatal pedestrian accidents in Nevada could reach record highs

Going for a walk or run near crowded city streets can be a dangerous activity. Roadways are becoming more congested as populations increase in Nevada cities. This means there is a greater risk for accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians. Despite laws and needed improvements in pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure throughout the state, pedestrian accidents are on the rise.

According to recent data, 2017 will most likely be the deadliest year on record for pedestrians and bicyclists. Data released at the end of the month by Nevada's Office of Traffic Safety says that there have been 59 pedestrian deaths so far this year. This number was up from 41 deaths at the same point in 2016.

The reason for the increase in fatalities may be linked to speed. According to research, vehicle speed plays a vital role in the likelihood of pedestrian survival during a collision. To combat this issue, there have been numerous public education campaigns launched. Police forces across the state are also cracking down on speeders and issuing more citations.

Hopefully, these measures taken by authorities will help to decrease pedestrian fatalities. However, as daylight savings time comes to an end in Nevada, poor lighting may decrease visibility for drivers, which could lead to even more pedestrian accidents during the remaining months of 2017. Nevada residents that suffer injuries or the loss of a loved one due to an act of negligence in a pedestrian accident can pursue claims for monetary damages, including for pain and suffering. A successful lawsuit could give result in compensation that can be used to cover medical bills and other expenses.
