Steps to take after a rear-end collision

Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of traffic accidents that occur. In a vast majority of cases, the injuries and car damage are not as severe as in other types of crashes. However, they can still be deadly. Take a recent instance in Las Vegas of a driver who rear-ended a semi-truck. Police pronounced the driver of the car dead at the scene.

While most rear-end collisions do not result in fatalities, it is still important to follow a strict set of guidelines to ensure your insurance claims process goes smoothly.

Check for injuries

Take note if you feel any pain or discomfort after the collision. You should also ask any passengers in your car as well as the other driver if anyone has suffered injuries. People may feel fine immediately after a car crash due to the rush of adrenaline people experience, but it is still important to see a doctor and be aware of anything out of the ordinary.

Call the police

Even if there are no injuries and the damage is minimal, it is a good idea to involve the police. An official report from law enforcement will help your insurance claim greatly. Additionally, a police report can help formally establish who was mostly at fault for the crash. In a majority of cases, the driver who rear-ended the other car is to blame, but the driver may make an argument otherwise.

Involve insurance agency

Rear-end collisions sometimes do not leave behind a lot of visible damage. However, there could be components damaged beneath the vehicle you cannot see. Even if the other driver offers a couple hundred dollars to repair the cosmetic damage, you need to be cautious because something could lurk beneath the surface. Document essential information at the scene, such as photos of the damage, to provide to your insurance agency later.
