Steps for when you are in an accident in a rental car

Millions of tourists continue to flock to Las Vegas every year. In 2016 alone, over 42 million people visited the area, which resulted in over $35 billion in tourism revenue.

There are many ways to get around the strip, and some tourists prefer the convenience of renting a car while they are here. Due to a lack of familiarity with the local roadways or fatigue, a tourist could easily end up in a car accident while operating a rental vehicle. After such an incident, people may feel worried because they have another company's car. Fortunately, the steps to take are similar to those when you are in an accident in your own vehicle.

Check on everyone's safety

First and foremost, you should make sure everyone in your car and the other car is safe. If possible, drive the vehicles to the side of the road so that everyone is out of harm's way. If anyone sustained any injuries, then someone needs to contact an ambulance immediately.

Exchange details

You should swap insurance information with the other driver as well as other pertinent information, such as phone numbers. At this time, you should also take photos of both vehicles to document the damage.

Call emergency services

You will want to file a police report so that the incident is on record. When the police arrive, answer all questions to the best of your ability. Do not guess if you are unsure of any detail.

Contact the rental company

You may need to go to the hospital, but as soon as you get a moment, you need to get in touch with the rental agency. Most rental companies will handle replacement, repairs and recovery. However, if you paid for the rental car in full for your time in Vegas, then you will likely not get the money back. Rental companies will have their own insurance policies, and they will work with your personal auto insurance carrier to handle all the fine details.
