4 safety tips when renting a bike in Las Vegas

Renting a bike is one of the best ways to experience Las Vegas. Whether you are a local or tourist, you can take advantage of the multitude of bicycle rental stations around the city. There are plenty of bikes available to rent thanks to the bicycle sharing program from the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.

The RTC program lets you pedal through Las Vegas in a healthy way that reduces traffic. However, bicycling in this city can also be hectic and dangerous. Keep these safety guidelines in mind as you ride your rental bike around the Strip.

1. Stay alert of your surroundings

No matter how many times you ride a bicycle around Las Vegas, it is vital to never get too comfortable or confident. Try to remain constantly cognizant of pedestrians, vehicles and other cyclists near you. Spatial awareness will help keep you out of trouble.

2. Plan ahead

Always know your route before getting to your destination via bicycle. The way you may take by car may not be ideal for traveling by bike. Consider traffic, distance, road width, terrain and availability of bike lanes when choosing a route. Preparing will make sure you have the safest ride possible.

3. Anticipate opening car doors

The worst phenomenon facing the biking community is "dooring." This occurs when you crash into a car door that suddenly opens. Unfortunately, you cannot know when drivers are looking out for cyclists when opening their doors. Therefore, the most effective way of avoiding this situation is by keeping as much distance as possible between yourself and parked vehicles.

4. Avoid blind spots

Most drivers are not looking out for cyclists. This means you need to stay as visible as possible. Stay out of blind spots as much as you can. A good rule of thumb is that if you cannot see car mirrors, the drivers cannot see you.
