How to be a safe pedestrian in Las Vegas

When you visit Las Vegas, you may simply rely on your feet to get around. While you may use the occasional cab, Uber or monorail, walking around the strip is often the most convenient way to explore Sin City. Unfortunately, you face a lot of risks as a pedestrian in Las Vegas.

There are always a lot of vehicles on the road, from impatient taxi drivers to drunk motorists. Here are a few tips for protecting yourself from being struck by a vehicle during your trip.

Make yourself visible

If motorists can clearly see you, they can easily avoid you. Helping drivers notice you is especially crucial at night. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most pedestrian deaths happen from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. You can combat this by staying in well-lit locations whenever possible, making eye contact with drivers and wearing bright or reflective clothing. You may want to use a flashlight when walking around during the evening.

Stay alert and defensive

Everyone knows about defensive driving, but what about defensive walking? While you may feel comfortable walking around, be mindful of not becoming too carefree. You never know when a negligent driver may make a deadly mistake. Stay aware of what is happening around you. Avoid distractions such as your phone or rowdy conversations.

Stick to safe areas

Rely on sidewalks whenever you can. If you must walk where there is no sidewalk, go on the far side of the street and face traffic to help motorists notice you. Similarly, use crosswalks when you can. If the road you need to cross is in an area where there is no crosswalk, try to use a well-lit area and wait for a gap in traffic.

Navigating through Las Vegas on foot can be challenging and scary at times, but these guidelines will help increase your safety and reduce the chances of an auto-pedestrian wreck.
