Driving under the influence of alcohol is not only incredibly irresponsible and dangerous, it is also the cause of thousands of deaths every year across the country. In Nevada, drunk driving remains a major concern and police forces have stepped up efforts to prevent drunk driver accidents. Unfortunately, there will always be drivers who choose to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
Authorities say a fatal crash near Reno was the result of drunk driving. The accident happened on Interstate 580 during the early morning hours. According to reports, the driver of a southbound pickup truck collided with an SUV traveling the same direction, with both vehicles coming to rest in the left lane.
Shortly after the initial collision, both vehicles were then struck by a second pickup truck, reports said. Tragically, the driver of the second truck died at the scene of the crash, according to police. Authorities said the driver of the SUV suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Reportedly, the driver of the first truck fled the scene of the crash on foot but was later apprehended by police. Police said he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Despite stringent laws, drunk driving still happens at an alarming rate. According to recent statistics, one person is killed in an accident with a drunk driver every 40 minutes in the United States. Those in Nevada who suffer injuries or the loss of loved ones in drunk driver accidents may have the right to take legal action. A successful personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can result in rightful compensation for victims and/or their families.
