Holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family and friends. It also is a time of a lot of travel. For Thanksgiving, travel by vehicle is prevalent as many people live within driving distance of where they will spend the day. The downside is that it means an increase in traffic on Nevada roadways and roadways across the country. Anytime there is an increase in cars on the road, it increases the accident risks.
That is why holidays, often have an increase in motor vehicle accident rates. The National Safety Council put together some estimates on what you may see on the roadways this holiday season.
Risky behaviors are a factor in the number of injuries and deaths that occur due to car accidents. Seatbelt use saves lives. If those who regularly wear them do so this holiday, there is the potential for these safety devices to save 165 lives. If everyone wears them, they could save another 97 lives. It may surprise you that this simple device found in every vehicle can mean the difference between life and death, but studies show it is a fact.
Alcohol and the holidays go together quite nicely, but this is not the time to get behind the wheel if you have been drinking. Choose a designated driver or call a rideshare company. Alcohol is a significant factor in accidents occurring around holidays, and Thanksgiving is no exception. In fact, it is a leading cause of many of this holiday’s accidents.
Looking at the overall estimate for injuries from road accidents during the holiday season, it ranges from about 42,700 to 52,800. The estimated number of potential deaths around Thanksgiving alone was 417.
The good news is that all these statistics could be zero because car accidents are preventable in most cases. Be aware, be safe and drive carefully this holiday season.
